When working with an existing swimming pool, there are usually numerous site variables that must be recognized and observed both before the pool demolition project begins as well as during the course of the project. We recently removed a vinyl lined swimming pool in Frederick County Maryland. It was a routine pool removal job for us, everything was typical and straight forward. The pool had a natural stone retaining wall next to it that was to remain intact. As we started breaking up the concrete apron around the pool, I discovered that there would be no structural support for the stone wall after removal of the concrete decking. Potential problem was detected and recognized. I knew that if we continued without addressing the issue, the structural integrity of the retaining wall would be compromised in months to come. So I decided it would be best to saw cut the concrete and leave a portion of the concrete in place up against the wall to act as a retainment system for the retaining wall, to help prevent the wall from sliding down the hill. I determined that in the end the concrete retainment would not be visible because we would backfill over the concrete with a heavy lift of soil. I feel certain that had this particular pool demolition been performed by a pool removal company without a knowledgeable owner on site – the issue would never have been recognized and contended with.
