Did your swimming pool lift out of the ground? Did your swimming pool float?
A concrete swimming pool that “floats” – or raises out of the ground – is an extremely rare occurrence, However, we remove or demolish a few floated swimming pools each year!
It’s hard to believe that a heavy concrete gunite swimming pool weighing many tons will float up or rise out of the ground! The reality is that a concrete pool is like a boat or a large ship, which may weigh many many tons yet it is still able to float! Most of the floated pools that we have removed in Maryland and Virginia have lifted anywhere from twelve to twenty inches! And its not unusual for pools to pop up out of the ground overnight.
In-ground concrete / gunite pools pop out of the ground for a number of reasons and these floated pools are costly to repair. The pools usually float when there is excessive ground water under the pool The hydrostatic pressure is so great that it hydraulically pushes the pool up from the ground just like a hydraulic cylinder.
When a swimming pool floats, the underground PVC pipes may crack or separate and the pool shell itself may crack. Often times the coping around the top edge of the pool structure cracks or comes loose and concrete decking nearby the pool will subsequently suffer damage. Electrical conduits and wiring going to the pool lights can also become separated or damaged, creating a risk of shock or electrocution.
Unfortunately, homeowner’s insurance does not cover the damage from pool pop ups in many cases. Please contact us today for your free quote to have your floated swimming pool removed!
